  6. • How to take a  look at Cosmology of KYOTO Overview...
  7.  
  8.      1.   Copy "Cosmology of KYOTO Overview.sea" to your harddisk. 
  9.            Please check that the harddisk has 2~3 MB space available.

  11.      2.   Double click on "Cosmology of KYOTO Overview.sea". 
  12.            The file will expand automatically.
  13.            The expanded original file will be approximately 2MB size.

  15.      3.   Finally, double clike on the file "Cosmology of KYOTO Overview" will start the 
  16.                                             overview demo.
  17.            The self-running demonstration is about 3 minutes long.

  28. • About Cosmology of KYOTO Startup Screen
  29.                     Most of the illustrations in Cosmology of KYOTO, such as characters, goblins, 
  30.                     buildings, were handwritten, captured with scanners, painted into fullcolor image 
  31.                     with Adobe Photoshop, and then finally animated with Macromedia Director  with 
  32.                     256 color.  Please enjoy some of the  lively original sketches we have included as a 
  33.                     file. (Illustrated by Yoshio Kiso/ Soft Edge, Inc.)

  35.      1.  The following three files are saved as Compact Pro 1.3.4 compressed files.
  36.           Women/FullColor.cpt
  37.           Nue/256Color.cpt
  38.           Aka Oni/256Color.cpt                    ("Aka Oni" is "Red Demon")

  40.      2.   All those three flies will extract into a file under a same name: "Startup          
  41.           Screen", so if you are willing to extract all three files, you must choose 
  42.           differenct destination for all three files to save.  (This is because you cannot 
  43.           keep multiple files with a same filename in a same folder.)

  88.          As the imperial capital of Japan for some 1000 years, Kyoto (original name: 
  89.          Heiankyo is the center-stage of classical Japanese culture and the cradle of the 
  90.          modern Japanese mind.  Its founding in 794 inaugurated the Heian period, one of 
  91.          the most brilliant and intriguing eras in world history.  Today the mentality and 
  92.          spirit of the ancient capital is increasingly recognized as a key to the 
  93.          comprehension of  Japanese and East Asian civilization, throwing light on the 
  94.          roots of modern patterns and problems.  Through the engaging medium of 
  95.          CD-ROM, Cosmology of Kyoto: Tales of the Heian Millennium brings the city to life

  103.                     Background
  104.          A thousand years ago, during the 10th century, the brilliant, gorgeous lifestyle of 
  105.          the Heian aristocracy reached its full flowering.  But in the shadows of daily 
  106.          life, goblins and demons ran rampant, and passions swirled around the curses of 
  107.          jealous poltergeists.  Even the founding of the city, as the new capital for 
  108.          Emperor Kammu, was surrounded by mysterious tales of vengeful ghosts, 
  109.          resulting in an urban plan dotted with special measures for spiritual protection.  
  110.          From the beginning, the deeply superstitious nature of the Heian population set 
  111.          the stage for a wierd and wonderful drama enacted behind the scenes of history.
  112.          Modern anthropologists have concluded that on the mental plane, Heiankyo was 
  113.          largely a territory of spirit and superstition.  The city was enveloped by a space 
  114.          which conventional history has ignored, a darkness inhabited by demons, ghosts 
  115.          and apparitions.
  116.          Cosmology of Kyoto zeroes in on Heiankyo from that backstage that history has 
  117.          cast aside.  Numerous anecdotes and legends of the time (including material from 
  118.          The Tale of Genji, Tale of the Heike, Tales of Long Ago, and noh plays) are 
  119.          encountered onscreen as interactive events.  Meanwhile, the game is shot through 
  120.          with the philosophy of popular Buddhism, especially the hell-and-paradise 
  121.          cosmology of the Pure Land school, which spreaded rapidly in Heian times and 
  122.          left an enduring influence on the mentality of Japan.  Plunged into intimacy with 
  123.          an historical mindscape, the user realistically experiences the all-but-forgotten 
  124.          worldview of the ancient Japanese, and senses at first hand the cosmology at the 
  125.          heart of the universe which is Kyoto.  This guided (but unpredicatable) mental 
  126.          tour of one of the world’s great cities allows the traveler to decipher deep 
  127.          layers of the past and present, by entering into a spirit-of-place which 
  128.          transcends time and space.
